Microneedling with PRP

For patients with sun damaged, aging skin, facial rejuvenation treatments are a godsend. At RinkleFree Plastic Surgery and Dermatology, located in Doylestown, King of Prussia and Newtown, we offer treatments that target any skin concern, from sagging skin to deep facial lines to hyperpigmentation and scars. Along with laser treatments and injectables, we also provide an innovative therapy that harnesses your body’s natural healing processes: Microneedling with PRP.

What is PRP Therapy?

microneedling with prp doylestownPlatelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy has long been used in sports medicine to accelerate the healing of injuries, typically to joints and tendons, which are common among athletes. In typical PRP therapy, the patient’s own blood is drawn and spun in a centrifuge. Blood is actually made of distinct components that include plasma, a liquid rich in healing agents, and platelets, which are responsible for clotting and the prevention of infection in healing wounds; the use of a centrifuge separates them.

Once the components are separated, the platelets and plasma are combined to create a serum (hence the name “platelet-rich plasma”) that is then injected into the site of the patient’s injury. The result is accelerated healing time, all thanks to the patient’s own naturally-occurring healing agents.

Lately, PRP therapy has extended out of the realm of sports medicine into cosmetics. It has gained popularity as a treatment for hair loss, as it is believed to stimulate the growth of thinning hair. PRP therapy can also be applied to facial rejuvenation.

What is Microneedling?

Microneedling was developed after dermatologists realized that skin that has been tattooed remains smoother, more supple and overall younger-looking compared to skin that hasn’t been. Tattooing entails repeatedly puncturing the skin with a needle to deposit ink. Dermatologists took this same principle of making small, repetitive punctures in the skin and applied it towards helping patients regain naturally youthful-looking, radiant skin, and thus microneedling came about.

Typically used for facial rejuvenation, microneedling is a process by which your dermatologist uses a set of oscillating micro needles, causing micro-injuries to the skin surface. This process, when used with PRP, stimulates the body’s natural healing processes by creating tiny punctures. As your body works to repair the injured tissue, it forms new layers of collagen and elastin, which contribute to the firm, smooth appearance of youthful, healthy skin.

When microneedling is combined with PRP therapy, not only will your dermatologist create the same microinjuries as they would in regular microneedling treatment, but will also topically apply PRP serum. The addition of PRP will help to stimulate and accelerate the healing process.

We recommend a series of three treatments four weeks apart to achieve optimal results.
